Enabling Enterprise Solid State Disks Performance

چکیده
In this paper, we examine two modern enterprise Flash-based solid state devices and how varying usage patterns influence the performance one observes from the device. We observe that in order to achieve peak sequential and random performance of an SSD, a workload needs to meet certain criteria such as high degree of concurrency. We measure the performance effects of intermediate operating system software layers between the application and device, varying the filesystem, I/O Scheduler, and whether or not the device is accessed in direct mode. Finally, we measure and discuss how device performance may degrade under sustained random write access across an SSD’s full address space.

BPCLC: An Efficient Write Buffer Management Scheme for Flash-Based Solid State Disks
Flash memory has been widely used for storage devices in various embedded systems and enterprise computing environment, due to its shock-resistance, low power consumption, non-volatile, and high I/O speed. However, its physical characteristics impose several limitations in the design of flash-based solid state disks (SSDs). For example, its write operation costs much more time than read operati...
متن کاملThe bleak future of NAND flash memory
In recent years, flash-based SSDs have grown enormously both in capacity and popularity. In highperformance enterprise storage applications, accelerating adoption of SSDs is predicated on the ability of manufacturers to deliver performance that far exceeds disks while closing the gap in cost per gigabyte. However, while flash density continues to improve, other metrics such as a reliability, en...
متن کاملLifetime management of flash-based SSDs using recovery-aware dynamic throttling
NAND flash-based solid-state drives (SSDs) are increasingly popular in enterprise server systems because of their advantages over hard disk drives such as higher performance and lower power consumption. However, the limited and unpredictable lifetime of SSDs remains to be a serious obstacle to wider adoption of SSDs in enterprise systems. In this paper, we propose a novel recovery-aware dynamic...
متن کاملPower, Energy, and Thermal Considerations in SSD-Based I/O Acceleration
Solid State Disks (SSDs) have risen to prominence as an I/O accelerator with low power consumption and high energy efficiency. In this paper, we question some common assumptions regarding SSDs’ operating temperature, dynamic power, and energy consumption through extensive empirical analysis. We examine three different real high-end SSDs that respectively employ multiple channels, cores, and fla...
